Episode 10: Runner's High with Bala

On episode 10 of NGDWTB, we hear from Bala Sankaran, former Twitter VP and current CEO of Alpha Ori Technologies. Shortly after trying his hand at running ten years ago (which is a hilarious story in and of itself), Bala became a certified coach through Road Runners Club. The first group he coached included his 9 year old daughter and her friends, all of whom completed their first half-marathon shortly afterward. Several years later, his community of runners has grown to over 150 people, most of whom are kids and their parents, and together they have finished 100+ races. In this episode, Bala tells us how he’s been able to inspire and motivate so many kids to achieve goals they never thought possible.

Bala Sit Karen He' just one of these people who sees the good andeverything and has always inspired me to be a better person. So last week Iwent down to Edison New Jersey to catch up with him and had been a very longtime and when he told me what he's been up to, I knew I had to have him on thePODCAST, but to take a step back. Bala is from India and after ten years is acaptain of a large shipping gasol. He came to the US to get his NBA fromWharton and then spent a few years in mckinzi the presigious consultingcompany and then went to Google, where I got to know him and then left Googlefor twitter, where he spent almost five years as VP of sales and marketingoperations. He left twitter Ino, two thousand and eighteen to become a CEOof startup in shipping technology and he's still in that position today. Butit's really not fallas background. That impresses me most, although it iscertainly impressive. Rather it's really how he approaches life. Forexample, one day he came into work, a Google and he told us he's Gonto startto do some hiking and then the next week he came in andtold us he he had signed up to climb Kellamanjaro the following month andthen, when he came back from that trip, he had this incredible story about howhis friend was ready to give up at the top of the mountain and Bala, had tocarry him in his pack and really pushed him and motivated him to complete theclimb he's. Just that guy has a million stories like that. So when we werecutching up last week, I noticed he was wearing a jacket that had a logo on it.That said, runners high with Bala, and when I asked him about it, he told methis incredible story, the story behind it and I don't want to give away toomuch in the intro, but basically I's created this whole community of runners,most of whom are kids and it is completely transforme their lives. Sowe'll talk to him about that and also hear some hilarious stories about hisfirst attempts at being a runner and his first marathon about ten years ago,he's a great dorry teller, just an incredible guy, so it was Super Fune tohave him on the show and without further ado, we'll hear from Bala Bala. I am so delighted to be talkingto you on this show. We've had a journey together over the years. Itstarted long time ago, a Google before we get into the amazing stuff you'redoing with runners high with Bala. Why don't you first give everyone a minuteor two on your background, you ere Google thand twitter and now yourCoasceo of your own start up in the text space. Why do you tell us a littlebit about that journey on what it's been like to go from his big techcompanies to starting your own, Hey sur thing mar is first offal. Iwas in engineer. I started office Tumian engineer and then you know climbed up the ladder. And tenyears later I was a chief engineer of Fiship and then you know one thing Leketo another. I came to the US to do my business chool. You know education. Icame after that. I was a consulted with Mickinjm Companyfor a couple of years and then I moved on to Google. That's where I had thehonor of working with Youmeisa. Five: six years that Google I was in thesales operations inditially and then all of is pecto Wi there in the agencyworld. It said that the time when Google started you know their Fori intothe agency world, so it was a fascinating journey. And after that Iwas a twitter as she had mentioned. I...

Essentially it's an IOT startup for the merchant marine word.Think of think of this pace. Like an you know, you know self driving ships. That wasthe final vision, and these are various steps to that. Ship is a huge. You know,factory. If you will so there's a lot of steps that is needed to get to asell, triving ship concept and our company is, you know forging that path towards that? Three years ago it's been, it's been a ve good right now, leading theircompany and the name of the company's allsoary technologies about hundredpeople work for the company. We have officers in Qor, five six locations andthings are going wrell. So that's the sort of quick journey for me in termsof a question about how did it? How does the Shit happen, and I must tellyou that I've always been very happy in whatever I do. I tri to seek happinessin everything I do so. I can attest to the truth in that, because, if there'sanyone I miss working with your Positiviti is top on the list Tanumens,and so it's not as if I moved from one to another, because I was dissilutionwith one or another, but that said, I always wanted to INNOWC mitershoemarker. I think that that coat sort of stuck with me. So,whenever I get too comfortable doing something that I've been doing or toogood at what I'm doing what happens is I have this internal thing that makesme feel as if I'm just wasting my time, and I would say that was one driverevery time I was at the top of my game, I always wanted to do something else,whether it was moved from my shipping to thisis cool or from there to Googl,to Google to twitder and Teeo start up. I think that theam was always there andthat's why I tried to do something different and you know, move from TechCompany and amazing companies, lectriter and Google, to our ownstartup has its pluses and minuses minus is you can get the same qualityof people around you like the person I'm talking to it's not possibe, it's not easy to getthat level of quality. You know not just one or two but surround et by thatlevel of quality. It's very rare and that's a speciality o working for bigcompanies like that. Obviously the extra perks and stuff is always great.The positive side is when you're going to start up every step. Everything you do is impact.You know it's about impact. Everything is a impact. You automatically selfprioritized the work that is needed. You don't do things just for the sakeof doing or just because your boss warms you do it because the companyneeds it or if you don't do it, the company will get take a hit or on theother way out. That is a very invigrating thing on startups and Itotally encourage everybody to try that out. It's a very different experienceand it's something that Kelps your you know: Problem Solving Atlis. I actuallyremember that feeling, Google back in the early days and two thousand andthree there was about fifty people in the New York office back then, andthere was so much work to do all the time that you know there is lesspolitics and things like that, because everything you do is so necessary andit felt like you know, just to stay alive. We had to work so hard, you'reforced to prioritize an doing work that matters restall doesn't matter, yes andit's funny how you you know describe that journey and who you are because Ithink that that's a great segue into this story about what you've done with yourrunning and coaching program, because...

...so one of the baskball there's so manygreat things about Balah. But one is like he said when he gets toocomfortable. He changes lanes, I guess, but the same as true I would I wouldsay for you personally, because you would sort of be, I guess a littleborder than you would get an idea like I'm going to start hiking and then twoweeks later we would you know you would be. You would tell us you come to theteam meeting and say guys. I booked a trip, I'm goingto climb kill em Anjaro.It was like there was just this appetite for always pushing theenvelope and whatever you did, and that is what I love about you and I think,is probably what happened here with this running thing. So tell us about that WHA. How did you getstarted with running and when was that yeah I mean thanks for BA thos kindofthoughts, magist but yeah so running. First of all, like I want to start bysaying, I've never run in my life now, if you er rewind my life back to mycollege days, even though I was in a little bit of a paramilitary set up thecollege, I was the least athletic of everybody. In fact, you know every yearthere used to be this cross country raise in my college, I'm at the riptpage of poenty twenty one supposed to be at Mapik of my fitness. The crosscountry rase within Coch was a fivekres. That's I just a fiek three mile raceand I've never done that in that four years. I've taken medical sort ofcertificate so that I don't do that because it is too long for me. That is,that is when IAM atthe judge the FIVEK raft. Yes, I literally totch that,because I thought I die doing that, that is my starting point is alwayslike that, and then I went and I sa said I was sailing on boatships. I hadan accident early on my career and I had a lower back problem too. Sorunning was something that just was. You know not even part of that. Thereason I'm starting with that is, if I can do whatever I've done just now,every human being on earth can do at least tenx better than what I've done.I just if there's one message I want to give you that's what I want to tell younot just for running, but in general it's just a Mindh game more than aphysical game. I think that's my message. One so early days, I've neverron and then, as se rightly said, it was shipping. Then you know I alwayswant to do something different and they reached a point. When I was moving fromMi can see the GOOGL. There was a one month cap in between, and you knowthree years ar conselting to on or three years of consulting. I must havetraveled like crazy eat and food everywhere. You know all the bad habitsone can have in a very hecty corporate life. I did it that put on way twentythirty pounds. My lower back was more pain, painful as a result and likegembely was feeling very, very unhealthy, and I had this one monthbefore me before. I could start my next job and I said, let me focus on myselfand someone literally that someone told me why don't you sign up for the NewYork Manatha? This is where I can't do hundred feet of running, and I said youknow what let me shoot for the stars. Even if I fail I'. At least you know goup to the TI skyscraper. You know something better than being on the land.Er was my idea. Am I literally signed up for Er New York marathon later Ididn't get it into the Lottry, so I signed up for a half man even before Iput my first foot forward and that's how my running jeurny began s how manyyears ago wis this this was the day I this was like one month before a joinGoogle, so that is twohand and eight okay, so then take us from therebecause I know there is a big gap in time there yeah so yeah. I started offand my first day of running, I actually thought I call nine unde and I'm noteven kidding you. This was I treat for a one round across my ground near myground in my house, and I thought somewhere in the middle. I was gettinga heart attack or something because I could not breathe properly, and thiswas me just strolling, not maybe little bit faster than walking. My heart waspalputating, and that was the starting point, but then one thing led to aneother tes.Another thing second thing I wul tell you about running is running is abeautiful sort of activity which gives you possible to feede back to yourself.So when you'd let' Say your goal is huntred meteres and you did hundred tenmeters that day, you don't have to...

...worry about anybody else. Giving a paton the back. Your body is going to give you a pact on the pack, because itgives you that so called runners hig. It's a tangible result that you can saa goal and you have very concrete feedback about whether or not youreached it. So sorry go thats, sor Tisi. So how manymarathons have you done now in the night in the lant? Next twelveyears have done eight full marathons and about think twenty, five or thirtyhalf Matathons so that twenty five or thirty half marathins I and when Balifirst started, telling me this story the Other Day about the coaching group which will get intonext. In fact, you know I did that a new art maratholas well with that type of training, where I just go and run myself or theweekends just look at he internet, and you know I thought that mental strengthis everything thens in long distance running. It's all vental strength,physical scenthal, automatically developed when you keep on doing thesame thing. That was my logic and, of course, very fraughd logic, and just togive you an idea, so I signed up for a Newyork, Maratha and Newa Karathon is,you know, go there without proper preparation in terms of jells and Gools,and things like that and just randomly have a previous night. Some pardy infact even had a beer or two and then go for a halffull Maracon next day morning,which be houers of sleep. This is is, is the worst thing one can do, butthat's what I did and then I go there and then I do this hapful Marachon. Ittook me almost seven hours. I think I was the last few people and around me Ihad like seventy. Eight year old, Grandpas Kand of cearing me up in thelast three miles to somemor, make it appen there was ane ambulance behind me.You would said that you know what, if you don't, if you don't want, you canalways jump into the ambulance and that type of stuff, because shutting downthe marathon and I finished it at seven PM- started offer. I think twelveo'clock or something finishi Hes, also drinkpeer along the way, or that wasjust the night before it wasn't available other, as maybe I done it tobut anyway stepedity, but it Servenp M. I finishand. By the way I didn't eventell my family that I'm going for a New York Macama, even no backup so rainyand the girls are like at home on a random Sunday and Youryou, say to themI'm going somewhere and you actually, the ware you were going to was to runthe New York City Marathon, something like they knew that Neord Marathona,but they hade no clue. That is a big deal or something. Nor did I kind ofmake it a big deal, so it's not like hovsomebody's waiting to cheer me up. Isaid finish this Oy Co, the night before when you'rehanging out having beers with everyone. Nobody really understands what is aboutto happen to you then never day that is fsae pot. Is I finish at sevenpee. Youhad no one there, not even non ther, I bod is hurting and them I have toactually pick myself and, like you know, like literally crawl to the next subwaystation, because I have to go to pen station ano coming back nine pm with,like I like a loser with the you know with this. Nobody is there I reach home.Even then nobody realized that I come back from one of the greatestachievements. At least nd in my mind, and it was just notal thing I...

...can every time. I think that I've heardthe best follow story. There could be you managed to top it. I Bet, I'm. Why I'm saying that is this is the worst way one can do ananything if you're really serious about it, you cannot wing the full Ma you gotto give respected deserves, otherwise othey will get injured or you will getout of the sport. So that's the sort of the lesson I learned that day andthat's when I got went event, aound searching for a coach and I got a coachyeah, so tell us now, let's transition into this amazing thing that you'vedone over the past few years, so you had a running coach once you realizeyour the way you were doing. It was probably so obtimal to say the veryleast and she's helping you run D, and you have this insight. You know what Ishould coach and then you go and get your certification through roadrunners.Ten then tell us what happened from there. Yeah Hat's right. Thank you.TAT'a yeah! Absolutely so I got a co she she explained. She, you know,opened the doors of what is training for long distance, it's signce and anart coming together and one thing I quickly realized that training for along distance, indeins run. It is not the end Gol. It is the journey to theend cold. That matters, that is when this metamorphosis, tha transformationof character, happens. If you do it right, and I realize that this is afantastic vaco for driving impact to people's life, which is somethingalways motivates me- and you know I have some skills of motivating others,but if I'm able to motivate others to a specific gooal in front which is prettybig which, when they do it in a systematic manner, they cannot onlyachieve that. They feel so good about themselves that they can change thetrigectory of their life. That was something super interesting for me totry out and that's why I went for that Corse and got myself certified as acoach and okay. I got this goat certification now I have opory to train.I was the sort of thought process and the person that I could definitelyforce or, if not force, convinced people to train for a half marathon wasmy own kid. Who was nine years at the time she was her name is dishop and letme pause here for a second, because I love this part. You take this course,but you have no clients to train, so you don't it the course, and you sayokay now I need people to train. Who should I train, and your idea was mynine year old daughter and her friend so yeah Tim that I din't even get thecertificate. Yet I've done all the courses. I haven't even become anofficial coache at in terms of cirty five coach, yet because it takes sometime to get the certificates. So here I am I'm having my nine year old daughter-and I remember this is party we had a local party for neighbors. I took alltheir kids, my friends, daughters, friends and all of them came togetherand it started Ou with this thing that imagine few finishing this amazing halfmile upon and having a medal that says what how big a hero you guys are doing,something challenging the stateis go and making something how nice it 'll be,and kids being git. They actually imagined that I could see the sparklein Thei Iye and they were in, and I told them, the story of you know bon torun the Thoroughmra tripe, which is a very yea, the Bith Pont Aran Yeah Right.So I told them that story where we said: Wes Human beings a want to run week anddo thiy BA blah blah. I did my sort of speel and these guys were in there wereabout twelve kids and we created this. This tag, lime for that. That was myseason. One Hen, the tabline was we our...

...family, so we ar family. We are goingto help each other out. We want to do some crazy things and we are going tobecome a half Marathoni. That was the idea. They were like three or four nineyearold kids adote girls and there ware some guys who areteny year old boys, ten levenyear old. So that was the group and it was themiddle of the winter and we started running in the winter. Like end of thefall beginning of the winter and heads all kids, only kids parents helped justto kind of motivate them so every weekend, thrers a motivational speechthat I would he give them stories and then make them wron. That was the go.That was ha. That's amazing, because if I said to my kids we're going to run ahalf marathon, they would laugh me out of the room. I love the way you startedwith a story to motivate them like so simple, yet something I never think todo with my kids and as a storyteller. You would think that that would be obvious to me. So what kind of storieswould you tell them to motivate them and and were were they able to keep upthe ad the positive attitude toward it? Because I mean that's tough in thewinter? Did you have to like really like? Did they start to sorm waver yeah,so ther're, two things I did one was a gamely find experience, so I createdthese badges. You know special customoder Dadgest, one mile finishedthey'll get a badge that they can put it on their short growing te Boye girlsscouts exactly by a girl, Scot Sives, O one mile bad and a twenty one days.Badge like finishing twenty one days is a big DA like created a story aroundhow pwenty an DAS is how character changes. You know this mega story there, how like oergenerations, they tried- and you know it's aside story there like that thereware two reason: indurents and commitment, so we started Ou with thetree pillars, Comi dedication, resiliens and having fun. Those werethe three things and I have stories that kept on adding fuer to these threepillars. So every time there was a dip I'll Kell something about resilienswiresiliancs is important. So you know all in all the kids just were not onlythey were motivated, they motivated us. They motivated me that you know theseguys just beiaved. In the mission I mean, I think, more than what I believethey were so hooked. This is actually possible and suddenlyI was motivated to do season to and all the Barents an Osesonto which was justthreenh two months later, so went from seven kids to the secondseason we had about. I think I had about thirty folks, adults and kids andkids were now the seniors Seno runners...

...right, ver, the seasons they were. Theseasoned ones and the parents were the Newbe, so you weeem twelve kid season,one over thirty people, the next round season to what were the kids reactionsto having completed the half marathon j, and I know that a many of themcontinued on and some of the nine ten year olds have run several halfmarathons in. So what was it like at at the end of the season when they finishWERH? I would imagine, there's such a pride. They have. They were on top ofthe world. First of fall. They were treated like adults, you know the firsttime, probably in their lives, where they were asked to give a speech to thes, to the adults and how to make this happen. They guide them. You know thatreminds me. I also had state o the Union meetings. That means an interimstate of the Union and the end of the season state of the Union where they wimake par point presentations about that journey. So I taught them how to make epresentation has well a little bit of Keakiness of mine, so I wanted to makethem a good present. Terrorist is not because my inter idea was running isjust a the channel through which a character can be bit on. Yeah characteris about intudents taking you know, taking a dip with the same level offerocity and happiness as o taking the Hihe so that you can always come backfrom a DEP and then able to present your thoughts in a structured banner.So I used to teach them how to run a meeting. It became atradition where this trunning is just a means to a larger end, which ischaracter, development and being a good human being Oso community building,because bringing parents and their kids together to around these common goalsand meeting every week and pushing each other. I mean it's incredible so Wenfrom twelve and season, two thirty a and how many people are we up to nowat' season for yeah we just completed season for, and we had hundred runnerhundred and two donars, this time and Hurrd an two runners we finished heasonfor and ecouned into about, forty five or so kids about sixty. You know: Male,a female to mail ratio, one to three foot: five time zones, three countriesand it's you know monope doctors, fredible- and I should mention all ofthis- is out of the spirit. Ball is own time. He doesn't make any money off ofthere's no money involved here. This is truly a passion that he has followed tohelp other people, and I am just so bold over by it. I think it's amazing.I know that running gave me so much confidence. I started running in highschool and I feel like it really changed my life, so I got the chillswhen he was telling me about this I'd love to hear you know these kids. Howis there how AV their lives changed and where do you go from here with thisprogram? So the kids so right now the statees issuch that kids, obviously they all are done. Ik many of the kids have done forMaratho for half marathons, and some of them are, you know, kids are moved onto they continue. Torun now running is basic for them. Many of them have nowjoyd. Some of them have joined high school or Middle School long distanceteam and they just Gol Crushit, because they've been doing it for some time.Some of them have started playing Colf a dage of twelve Wen thirting becauseof the community. So there is a Commi Golf tlrub that has been created, andthat is happening for some. Some of them are like doing so well on running,they've started simming and maybe those guys Whan Bica Min man, athletes. Whoknows I mean- and you know just so- you know that some of the tigh end of thekids- they do one hour, forten minute, half Matotons, which is likephenomonrea yeah. That's onreal pace ant. They are all of Leven and twelveyears old and ti of just like you know taking it to the next level. Thisseason there's this guy, who just finished one or fifty one minutes, halfmarathon and he's just ten ears on, and...

I cannot even believe in this- is I'mnot even a professional for o college level at the coach. So I'm only imaginewhen this guy goes into a high school, where a real coach professional coachcan actually come and teach them. I think they're going to crush I'm soglad they. The kids, are doing it. But what is more imp important for me isthe parents or the adults. There are so many oderts women and men who havestopped thinking about themselves. Ever since they came, you know family kids,Blah Blah Nah and they used to be good runners when they were collegeer whenthey were in college and suddenly they have remented and e discoveredthemselves. The number of people for, for instance, have lost, you knowpounds like pounds and pounds and who have become so fit that cloths have allkind of disappeare there buying a new WATR ropper. Se, the number of peoplewho say that who have visibly changed like there are people who have lostthirty ponds. Fifty pounds, forty pounds like in as if it's a normalthing, that's normaly in our group now and people are just focused on theirhealth focus on their mental fitness. It is just unbelievable to see theamount of positivity among the adults. This is created. We just finishedourseason for one month ago, and I've had innumerable phings from these guysarea, I'm actually getting bored. When is the next season study? You know theywant that regimental discipline like and also now with quarantine andeverything. I think there could be an element of I mean everyone feels socooped up and stuck inside and disconnected from real humaninteraction. To give to have this opportunity to feel connected to otherpeople around something bigger than yourself. It's got it reallyimprovemental health. I would imagine totally totally because you know, as wediscuss running, is a very beautiful positive spiral, late activity, rights,a Meditativ and meditative. Yes, very perfect use of that word. People getinto into a Zon a positive zone where they are in sink with their own port,mind body and soul gets aligned when they arei, which is an awesome thing,and it's also a kind of a you know. Importantten, as you said, it's asingle sport. It can be easily a single sport where you just do it yourself,you're in my own pone, and you don't have to worry about all the socialdistancing issues right, but you're still part of this larger. You know thefabric of a real community. Are you guys still meeting every week, so wehave because of of course, gowit that tetap with that meetings have roducedquite a bit, but then we very well connected over online to Lextra andwhat's happened all that sor B, the community is super virtually tight,even though they do it separately. That's the only thing I would tell you even you know,especially during covid times, and all some people not accuse me, but you know chide me by saying you're always toopositive, but I really think that there is absolutely no downside to beingposited. Always looking at positive side of everything is only going tohelp you and when you're positive, you do thinksthat you never thought you would do and four things out of five things wouldclick. One thing would fail and people might say Cu Byou were too positive,and hence you see you failed on that one. But what my answer to that is: Ifyou are not possitive, you would have tried five things. You've only donethree things so literally, as you think about it, you actually increase thenumber of things you have succeeded, not o reduce a number of things. You'vefailed by being positive, so tha. I agree with you and of course you know,I could leave it at that, but it's me so now. I need to dig in for a second,because you know me. I agree with you. I think, maybe what why people aren'tmore positive because you're right there is no downside. So why isn'teveryone positive? Because it doesn't mean it's easy right? It's not alwayseasy to find the positive spin on something or look for the the light andsomething that's dark. It's hard, but it's worth it and it's easy sometimes to benegative because it feels like in some way we relinquish control of whateverit is, and you know so being positive.
